Difference between WSN and IoT

One of the most interesting technologies today is the Internet of Things (IoT). It is having an impact on how we interact with one another as well as with technology. Other sensor network-related technologies. However, are also becoming more and more popular. One of the key technical elements of the Internet of Things is a wireless sensor network. Let us discuss some more differences between WSN and IoT with the help of the comparison given below.

What is WSN?

A wireless sensor network(WSN) is a collection of specialized sensors that are used to track and record environmental conditions while also organizing the gathered information in one central location. It is a network and narrowband IoT.

What is IoT?

A network of actual physical objects that have the ability to gather and share electronic data is referred to as the "Internet of Things" (IoT). The Internet of Things is made up of a wide variety of intelligent devices, ranging from sensors that track information about the human body to manufacturing machinery that transmits data about the manufacturing process.

Difference between WSN and IoT

  • WSN stands for wireless sensor network, and IoT stands for Internet of Things.
  • WSNs are used to track and gather information about environmental or physical conditions. In contrast, the Internet of Things is a technology that links hardware to the Internet to communicate with other devices and exchange data.
  • Wireless sensor networks are frequently made to function in particular settings for a particular use. While the Internet of Things is intended to be more inclusive and versatile.
  • Wireless sensor networks are frequently used for monitoring in challenging or dangerous conditions. But the Internet of Things is used to connect various equipment and objects in settings that are more commonplace.
  • Wireless sensor networks typically consist of a large number of small, low-power sensors that wirelessly transmit data to a central base station, whereas A smaller number of devices that are connected to the internet through wired or wireless connections make up the Internet of Things (IoT).
  • A single organisation typically deploys and manages wireless sensor networks. The Internet of Things, on the other hand, is more decentralised and involves numerous groups and people.
  • Wireless sensor networks frequently use proprietary technology and protocols. But the Internet of Things relies on industry-standard protocols like TCP/IP.
  • The wireless sensor network market is still in its infancy, Internet of Things market is more developed.
  • Wireless sensor networks are frequently closed systems with data being collected and used by deploying organizations. On the other hand, the Internet of Things is more open, where data is shared and used by a variety of organizations and individuals.
  • Data collection and monitoring involve wireless sensor networks. The Internet of Things can be used for a number of things such as data gathering, monitoring, control, and communication.
  • While the Internet of Things is more dynamic, with devices and objects moving around and connected to different networks, wireless sensor networks are typically static, with sensors being deployed in a specific location and remaining in that location.
  • Wireless sensor networks consist of a network of only sensors, Internet of Things has a gateway that can connect to Internetworks (routers, switches, and Aps).
  • Wireless sensor networks run IPV4 and feature a sink. Internet of Things runs IPV6 in the sensor networks and IPV4 on the internetwork portion.
  • The routing protocol in Netsim WSN included DSR, AODV, OLSR, and ZRP. Routing protocols in Netsim IoT include AODV and RPL.
