Difference Between GPS and DGPS

GPS stands for global positioning system, and DGPS stands for differential global positioning system. Both GPS and DGPS are used for satellite-based navigation systems. The main difference between GPS and DGPS is the GPS has a worldwide coverage area for its equipment, while the DGPS instruments range is local. Let us discuss some more differences between GPS and DGPS with the help of the comparison given below.

GPS Vs DGPS | Difference between GPS and DGPS

  • GPS stands for global positioning system, and DGPS stands for differential global positioning system.
  • While the frequency of GPS ranges between 1.1 and 1.5 GHz, that of DGPS varies depending on the needs of the agency.
  • GPS accuracy is 15-10m, and DGPS accuracy is 10cm.
  • GPS's instruments range is global, and DGPS's instruments range is local.
  • GPS uses WGS84, which is used for the time coordinate system, Whereas in DGPS, the local coordinate system is used.
  • DGPS is more expensive than GPS, but GPS is less expensive than DGPS.
  • The cost of GPS is lower than DGPS, Whereas the cost of DGPS is costlier than GPS.
  • In GPS, only one receiver is taken place, While in DGPS, two receivers are taken place.
  • A GPS system is affordable compared to a DGPS system.
  • GPS, a handheld device receives the signal from the satellite for the position where as a DGPS world handheld device receives the calibrated signal from the ground-based transmitter.
